What owners should know

Maine Coons are prone to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) — the most common feline heart disease. Spinal muscular atrophy and hip dysplasia also occur in the breed. Genetic screening is recommended for breeding cats. Regular cardiac check-ups are advisable.
