Can Cats Eat Chocolate?

No. Chocolate is toxic to cats. Like dogs, cats cannot metabolize theobromine — the compound found in chocolate — efficiently. Even small amounts of chocolate can cause poisoning in cats.

Why Is Chocolate Toxic to Cats?

Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, both of which belong to a class of compounds called methylxanthines. Cats lack the liver enzymes needed to break these compounds down efficiently, leading to toxic accumulation in the body.

Dark chocolate and baking chocolate contain the highest concentrations of theobromine, making them most dangerous. Milk chocolate and white chocolate contain lower levels but are still harmful.

Symptoms of Chocolate Poisoning in Cats

  • Vomiting and diarrhea
  • Increased thirst and urination
  • Restlessness and hyperactivity
  • Rapid breathing
  • Muscle tremors or seizures
  • Heart arrhythmias

Treatment

If you suspect your cat has eaten chocolate, contact your veterinarian immediately. Treatment typically involves inducing vomiting (if caught early), activated charcoal to prevent further absorption, IV fluids, and monitoring for cardiac symptoms.
